TEAM NEWS: Van Asseldonk joins Fortec for British F3

Fortec press release

TEAM NEWS 1 MARCH 2012: Dutch racer Hannes van Asseldonk will join Fortec’s British Formula 3 team for the 2012 season.

Van Asseldonk, who finished second in the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, joins Felix Serralles, Pipo Derani, and 2011 Formula Renault 2.0 UK Champion Alex Lynn at the Daventry-based outfit.

Hannes began racing cars in 2010, contesting the Formula BMW Championship and the final three rounds of the Formula Abarth Championship, enjoying great success in both series. The 20-year-old then moved up to Formula 3 for the 2011 season, competing in the German Formula 3 Championship, where he finished fifth overall, recording five podium finishes. Van Asseldonk went on to contest the illustrious Macau Grand Prix in November – a highly demanding race weekend which brought together some of the most renowned racers – finishing a praiseworthy fifth in an action-packed final race.

Hannes has already been out on track this year; the racer travelled to New Zealand to take part in the Toyota Racing Series along with fellow Fortec drivers Nick Cassidy, Josh Hill, Shahaan Engineer and Felix Serralles. He finished second to Cassidy, scoring eight podiums finishes, including three victories in the 15-race series, which is ideal preparation for the main season ahead.

Hannes is confident that he can perform well this season: “I’m very happy to sign with Fortec for this season; I know there will be a lot of competition with some very strong drivers and I’m really looking forward to that. It will be tough as there are a lot of circuits that I’ll have to learn but I’m really confident that I can do a good job for the team and I can’t wait for the season to get underway. I have to extend a special thank you to a Dutch investor, without whom I wouldn’t be able to compete in the Championship this season, so I hope to do a great job as the best way of saying thank you for their support.”

Fortec team principal Richard Dutton is convinced that Hannes will be a key addition to the team: “I’m delighted that Hannes is joining the team for 2012 and I trust that he’ll do a great job this year. Hannes has a great track record; he performed extremely well in Macau and in New Zealand and is a real talent so I’m looking forward to seeing him develop and record some strong results.”

The first round of the COOPER TIRES British Formula Three International Series takes place at Oulton Park, April 6-7. This year will see the new Dallara F312 take to the track, boasting greater safety, and economy.
