The streets of Pau in south-western France lay claim to the honour of having held the first-ever “Grand Prix”, on the Circuit du Sud-Ouest in 1901.
The Grand Prix de Pau was inaugurated in 1933 and has over the years played host to many of the sport’s greatest names; its winners include Nuvolari, Fangio, Ascari, Behra, Clark, Stewart and Rindt. Originally a Formule Libre event, it subsequently attracted Formula 1 cars, F2 machinery, F3000 and, between 1999 and 2006, Formula 3. The Grand Prix returned as an F3 event in 2011.
