As Formula 3 celebrates its 60th anniversary in Britain, the Cooper Tire factory in Melksham, Wiltshire, enjoys its 30th year of providing tyres to British F3 and Cooper acts as the title sponsor for a third consecutive year. The association between Cooper and F3 began back in 1982, when Avon Tyres Motorsport became the control tyre supplier to the British series. The Avon name continued in the series until 2008, when Avon’s US-based parent company, Cooper Tires, took over the role.
Cooper’s tyre team has been working closely with F3 teams for almost three decades to produce a tyre that suits the demands of the series. Teams and drivers want a single dryweather compound for all races and test sessions throughout the year, whether testing in winter or racing in the height of summer, so that they have a consistent base on which to improve their car set-up and help young drivers improve their skills. The company is more than just a tyre supplier – it provides funding towards supporting the championship, which helps to attract some of the best young drivers in the world.
This year, each Championship Class F3 driver gets an allocation of 60 sets of slick, dry weather Cooper tyres, while each Rookie Class entrant can use 55 sets. These are to be utilised throughout the year in testing and race meetings, while the number of wet tyres is unrestricted. On each race event, they are restricted to just two sets of slick tyres, so that rivers learn how to look after their tyres – a skill they will need when they make it to Formula 1.
